Wine

Good sangria starts with good wine. At the base of any sangria is either a white or red wine, although red is the more traditional vintage. In fact, “sangria” is Spanish for “blood”, and the dark red color of a red wine sangria definitely bears a resemblance to blood. However, white wine sangria can be delicious, light, and refreshing on a hot day.

Sweetener

Sangria aims to take away any lingering bitterness found in wine in order to make the beverage easier to drink. That is where sweetener comes in. Most sangria features some kind of sweetener to balance the flavor, with some common sweeteners including simple syrup, sugar, or an artificial sweetener.

Carbonated Beverage

Sangria should have some fizz to it, so some kind of carbonated beverage is usually added to the concoction in order to give it some bubbles. Some popular carbonated beverages that are commonly added to sangria include soda water, seltzer water, or even flavored soda.

A Liqueur

Usually, a flavored liqueur is added to sangria in order to better balance the beverage and give it a little more oomph. In most cases, the liqueur is either Triple Sec or Cointreau.

Fruit

The ingredient that puts sangria over the top is the chopped-up fruit that is typically found in the beverage. Pretty much any fruit will work, giving the sangria a big dose of flavor and adding a fun sweet treat to the bottom of every glass. Usually, citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, and oranges can be founds in sangria, but that does not mean you should limit yourself to just citruses. Add other fun fruit to your sangria such as apples, peaches, pears, kiwis, strawberries, and much more!
