Why Is The Tango So Important To Argentina by Puerto La Boca San Diego

Why Is The Tango So Important To Argentina?

June 01, 2021 in Argentinian Cuisine

When most people think of Argentina, they think of tango. Tango is one of the most well-known types of dances in the world, and Argentina is famously the home to tango. If you ever go to Argentina, the streets will likely be littered with tango cafes and performances, and you better believe the locals all know how to dance the tango. So why is the tango so important to Argentina?

The Origins of the Tango

Tango was first used as a term to describe music and dancing in the late 18th century in Buenos Aires. Tango was the name for the music of the slaves at the time in Argentina, more specifically the name of large gatherings in which slaves danced to evocative music. Tangos were quickly banned, but the word did not go away and actually grew in prominence over the next 100 years.

The tango features an eclectic mix of cultures and customs, and it is a result of Argentina’s unique diversity. Argentina is home to immigrants from England, Poland, African nations, and much more, and this mishmash of cultures eventually resulted in the tango dance and music.

What Influenced Tango?

The tango is thought to be a combination of flamenco, polka, African dances, and other cultures, making it a uniquely Argentine dance.

When Did the Tango Become Popular Worldwide?

By the end of the 1900s, the tango had exploded in popularity and had begun to spread worldwide. Tango particularly flourished in North America and Europe, attracting new fans with energetic dancing and exciting music.

Why is the Tango So Important to Argentina?

So now that you better understand the origins of the tango, why is it so important to Argentina? First, Argentinians are proud of their creation and love that their little dancing innovation has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Another reason is what it represents about Argentina. The tango began as a way for slaves to express themselves, and later it became common at large house parties. Now, you can see the best tango dancers in the world perform in Buenos Aires. This represents the incredible diversity the nation has to offer, with people from different countries and social classes collaborating to create something joyous and fun.
